Beach Thief

I sit on the land’s fringe
among blue-grey rocks
and throw pebbles
at the encroaching sea.

Today it is silver
glittering in the morning sun
Yesterday it was yellow
sand-stirred and wild.

Deeper waters glow green
with a white sail
moving across the horizon
delicate and alone.

The sun warms me
and I take a stone
smooth comfort in my hand
too beautiful to let go.

Blue-white and gleaming
it tempts, and I succumb,
pocketing nature’s egg
like a tide-side magpie.

The waves hiss as I leave
whispering sweet accusations
The stones shift as I climb
taking my treasure home.
