Novel writing

The importance of names. All writers learn that , to make a story believable, the names used for the characters have to be time-specific. Someone called Ethel or Albert is older than someone called Samantha or Troy. However, recently I have been reading books where the sex of the character is not immediately obvious from the name and if the wrong connection is made it is difficult to shift. ‘Ainslie’ for instance – looks like a girl’s name- but is it? ‘Jamie’ should be short for James-but is it? Robin – is it a boy or a girl? The author usually tells us once and then expects us to remember but if there are a lot of characters in the book I find it increasingly difficult. Am I the only one?
