Writing and Music

by juliecround

How is it that some people need music to help them write and others (like me)find it impossible to write with any noise?
Maybe it depends on what part of the brain we are using – or which sense is dominant? I know I learn through listening so if there is a tune playing I cannot think about what I need to write yet it seems from other posts that some people find music an aid to writing.
Perhaps the kind of music I appreciate does not fit with the kind of writing I do. I have never been a fan of classical music. Music, to me, is for movement – dance or march – not thought, although we have been given exercises in a creative writing class where a piece of music is played and then we have to write a passage linked to it.
Any thoughts?
